Tribute is a Symbol of a Special Partnership

Family and Friends Gather to Honor Fallen Hero CHP Officer Artie J. Hubbard

Last fall, a pair of distinctive, official green signs was erected on the Interstate 5 freeway, just north of Sacramento, to honor the sacrifice Fallen Hero CHP Officer Artie J. Hubbard paid while on duty, protecting the citizens of California.  This tangible and enduring tribute to Officer Hubbard stands as a symbol of a positive special partnership forged among the CHP 11-99 Foundation, the California Association of Highway Patrolmen (CAHP), the California Highway Patrol and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).  The Senate Bill that assured the dedication of the signs would someday become a reality was sponsored by California State Senator Michael J. Machado.

On the evening of April 5, 1985, while responding to an 11-99 ("Officer needs assistance") call, CHP Officer Artie Hubbard's patrol car slid and struck a utility pole broadside.  As a result of the impact, Officer Hubbard suffered extensive injuries, including the severing of his spinal column. A man of great strength and tenacity, Officer Hubbard survived the horrific crash, but for the next 10 years, he required around-the-clock care and he was limited to communicating through eye movement.  Officer Hubbard eventually succumbed to his injuries, dying on December 8, 1995.  At the time of the accident, Officer Hubbard was a 10-year veteran of the California Highway Patrol.  Fallen Hero Officer Artie Hubbard served with distinction in both the Central Los Angeles and South Sacramento Area CHP offices.  Officer Hubbard's brother, Michael Hubbard, currently is a veteran CHP Officer serving in the CHP's Modesto Area office.

Gone, but never forgotten, the memory of Fallen Hero CHP Officer Artie J. Hubbard lives on in the hearts and minds of the many loving family members he left behind, the many CHP colleagues with whom he served, and everyone who drives past the I-5 based signs erected to honor Officer Hubbard's sacrifice and his unwavering commitment to maintaining the safety of the citizens of California.
